Ally McCoist and Kenny Miller stunned by Rangers star Connor Goldson v PSV

Ally McCoist and Kenny Miller have praised centre-back Connor Goldson for his “magnificent” performance at Ibrox in Rangers’ Champions League clash against PSV.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (23 August), the pair suggested that while the 30-year-old may have looked a “little rusty”, he performed very well with centre-back partner John Souttar, even suggesting that the Rangers veteran improves Souttar’s game.

The Gers worked hard and played very well in stages against PSV on Tuesday (23 August) and will go to Eindhoven happy with the 2-2 result.

Rangers

As quoted by Glasgow Live, McCoist said on talkSPORT: “He came back in the side last night and I thought him and Souttar, maybe Souttar gets done a bit for the second goal, but the two centre-backs in particular were magnificent.”

Miller replied: “Agree, I thought he was absolutely outstanding last night. He has maybe looked a wee bit rusty, I don’t know what his pre-season has looked like in terms of his injury and I don’t think he had too much action, but last night he was a rock. Soutar was solid as well but Souttar without Godlson is not quite the same.

“Even Tavernier at the back, his relationship with Goldson, having him there just improves Rangers’ defence massively. He headed everything, tackled everything and looked right back at the top of his game.”

Composed

Despite only returning from injury last month following a knee injury [TransferMarkt], Goldson did very well against PSV.

Per SofaScore, Goldson completed three clearances, blocked four PSV shots and made two tackles all while completing the full 90 minutes.

He also popped up all over the park and found himself in advanced positions, but ensured consistent defensive stability throughout the match.

Rangers

Rangers are slightly light on quality centre-back options, especially considering the wealth of forward players Michael Beale has to play with this season.

So Gers fans will feel very reassured by Goldson’s solid performance in his third successive Champions League start this season.

Miller claimed Goldson’s performance was a Rangers career standout, claiming he was “at the top of his game”. Most interestingly to Rangers fans however is his observation regarding how the former Brighton man improves those around him.

Beale will need characters like this for the coming season and could face much tougher challenges than PSV if they secure group stage qualification on Wednesday (30 August).
