Cyriel Dessers gives Michael Beale selection headache for Rangers Champions League clash after previous heroics v PSV

Rangers manager Michael Beale has plenty of big decisions to make when his side host PSV in the Champions League.

The Gers welcome the Dutch giants to Ibrox for their play-off round first leg clash on Tuesday (22 August), before travelling to Eindhoven for the return leg next Wednesday (30 August).

It’s the biggest and most important test of the season so far for Beale, who will be desperate for his new signings to make their mark on the big stage.

But the boss has a major dilemma in who to hand starting places to, with different summer signings having different impacts so far in their brief Rangers careers.

And one man in the centre of discussions will be striker Cyriel Dessers, who already has two goals for the club since his move from Cremonese.

But it is his time at another previous club, Feyenoord, that Beale may factor in when choosing his starting XI for the first leg clash.

And that is because the attacker has previous against PSV, with Dessers scoring three times from his two matches against them during his 2021/22 loan spell with the Netherlands side.

It’s a remarkable record from the Nigerian international, who banged in a superb total of 20 goals from his 41 appearances during his temporary stay there.

Of course, there is another attacker with strong links to Dutch football that has arrived at Ibrox this summer, with Danilo also finding the net against PSV during his time at both Feyenoord and FC Twente.

Their feats over recent seasons against the club’s upcoming opponents should give Beale plenty to think about, with the manager not able to afford to get much wrong in terms of team selection across the two legs.

Ironically, a third attacking signing of Beale, Sam Lammers, spent several years at PSV, and also played against them during a loan spell at SC Heerenveen.

In other Rangers news, new Championship competition has emerged for one Gers player linked with an Ibrox exit this summer.
