Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell opens up on social media abuse

Todd Cantwell has revealed he gets abused and threatened every day on social media, as the Rangers midfielder played down an image uploaded on Instagram.

The 25-year-old posted a picture of himself on Sunday [21 August] with his tongue out, shortly after Celtic were eliminated from the Scottish League Cup with a shock defeat to Kilmarnock.

Cantwell moved to clear up any confusion over the post in a message posted on his Instagram story on Monday [21 August].

“Woke up this morning to see all the comments about a photo I posted,” he said.

“So just for clarity, I can get abused every day in so many ways and get threatened, but I can’t post a photo of me smiling?

“Seriously guys. May as well all just delete our accounts then.”

Online abuse

Only Cantwell, who has received stick from his own supporters as well as opposition fans, truly knows the meaning behind the image he uploaded.

Either way, it was a post that garnered plenty of attention.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, although of course there is a line that cannot be crossed – abusive and threatening messages, whether online or in person, being an example.

Cantwell was one of eight players to make way for the Greenock Morton tie, with Michael Beale using the match as an opportunity to rest some key men ahead of facing PSV on Tuesday [22 August].

Rangers

January signing Cantwell is one of five first-team regulars who are expected to be recalled to the starting line-up for the Champions League play-off first leg at Ibrox [Daily Record].

After his somewhat controversial Instagram post, the Englishman will now get an opportunity to do his talking on the field.

Should the Gers be on the end of a disappointing result, it might be wise for Cantwell to stay off social media for the time being.

In other Rangers news, Ianis Hagi insists his side are good enough to compete in the Champions League proper.
