Barry Ferguson: Rangers might have unearthed gem with new signing Jose Cifuentes
Rangers’ new signing Jose Cifuentes has “hit the ground running” at Ibrox and could be an important player at Ibrox, according to Barry Ferguson.
Writing in the Daily Record (18 August), Ferguson claims that the Ecuadorian has impressed in his first two games for the Gers against Livingston and Servette.
The £1.2million midfielder, according to Ferguson, has proved himself to the fans while other new Rangers signings are yet to settle into Michael Beale’s side.

As reported by Daily Record, Ferguson said: “He has hit the ground running with two very impressive performances in the last week. And, already, I’m prepared to say Rangers might have unearthed a gem here. He’s powerful, strong in the tackle, can handle the ball and looks like a composed operator. Let’s just say, I like what I see.
“But the biggest concerns from the supporters are over the players who have been brought in to make a difference further up the pitch and it’s fair to say that all five of them have a bit of work to do to win the punters over.”
Difference maker
While attackers’ success is often measured in goals and assists, a midfielder can often be more difficult to read. Cifuentes however has been excellent for the Gers since his arrival.
For just £1.2million, he could prove to be the deal of the summer if he continues in this vain. His heatmap for the Livingston clash, according to SofaScore, shows Cifuentes was dominant across the right wing and picked up the ball frequently in the attacking third showing how dangerous he can be on the attack.

The former LAFC man also had two shots on target and will hope to get his first Rangers goal soon enough. He had a similarly good performance in the Champions League against Servette. He creates space which allows attacking players to generate shots.
His physical dominance too makes him a worthy opponent. He came straight into Beale’s side upon arrival and is clearly admired by many at the club.
While Rangers fans are still trying to work out how many of their new signings will work out at Ibrox, most including Ferguson are confident that the Ecuadorian is more than capable in the midfield.
In other Rangers news, Kevin Thomoson has gushed over a “game changer” academy product who will soon be ready for first-team action.
