Rangers seriously consider bid to sign Ronnie Edwards as Peterborough United chief speaks out

Rangers are seriously considering a move for Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards after being told he is “too good” by the Posh chairman, according to Football Scotland.

The news publication reported online (17 August) that the Gers’ lead UK scout was in attendance for the 20-year-old’s most recent outing, as his side recorded a 3-1 victory away at Barnsley.

Michael Beale is still keen on bringing in a new centre-back, although the club face competition for Edwards’ signature amid interest from Premier League clubs West Ham and Crystal Palace. Peterborough’s own chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, has spoken out on the future of the England Under-20 international.

“It’s an absolute joke Ronnie is still here,” MacAnthony admitted, in quotes reported by Football Scotland (17 August).

“We are all amazed and it’s not because we are being greedy or silly. He’s now far too good for us and I don’t believe he will still be with us when the season starts as he is made for some of the teams in the Premier League. This is not me making an advert for him, but clubs need to be serious and do the right deal.”

Unprecedented

It is not every day that you hear the chairman of a club speak so openly about one of his players in the way that MacAnthony has spoken. Of course, many will suspect that he is perhaps trying to drive up a bidding war for his prized asset, although regardless of whether or not that is the case, it is clear that Edwards can be considered for sale.

And this should give Beale’s side encouragement as it will make a deal much easier to complete if the selling club are, so publically, willing to let their player go this summer.

Supporters in Glasgow would be able to get behind a signing like this, due to the age and potential of the defender, and Edwards could certainly develop into a top centre-back at Ibrox if given enough time and the right guidance.

This is certainly one the Glasgow giants should seriously be considering getting across the line.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has warned Beale of a potential “crisis” he might have on his hands.
