Rangers ace Todd Cantwell wows in ‘outstanding’ Man of the Match display v Servette

Rangers ace Todd Cantwell was “outstanding” in the club’s 2-1 Champions League third round qualifying win against Servette, according to BBC Scotland’s Nick McPheat.

The journalist noted that the midfielder should be a “guaranteed starter” under Michael Beale after wowing in the first leg at Ibrox on Wednesday (9 August).

James Tavernier and Cyriel Dessers netted first-half goals for the hosts, with Chris Bedia scoring a penalty for the visitors, who finished the match with 10 men.

“Following his exclusion from the side at Rugby Park on Saturday, Todd Cantwell showed why he should be a guaranteed starter in this Rangers midfield in an outstanding first-half display,” McPheat wrote for BBC Sport.

Key player

Many Rangers fans were left stunned by Beale’s decision to omit Cantwell from his starting line-up for the Scottish Premiership clash against Kilmarnock on Saturday (5 August).

The shock from the visiting supporters perhaps continued for some time into the second half, with the Gers manager then finally introducing the star midfielder in the 62nd minute at Rugby Park with the score tied at 0-0.

Perhaps it was simply to allow Cantwell to be fully fit for the more important clash against Servette, with the former Norwich City midfielder playing the entire 90 minutes under the lights at Ibrox.

The Gers have brought in so many new players this summer that seemingly no starting role is certain, but Cantwell will definitely be a key man for Beale in all competitions this season.

He hit the ground running immediately in Scotland following his move from the Canaries in January, with the midfielder endearing himself to the Ibrox faithful with his top displays.
