Rangers windfall on cards as ‘lucrative’ £25m Champions League news emerges

Rangers will receive a jackpot of around £25million if they reach the Champions League group stage, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish newspaper reported on its website on Monday (7 August) that the Gers banked the same fee when they qualified for the same stage last season.

Rangers take on Swiss club Servette in the third qualifying round, with the winner of that two-legged tie set to take on the winner of the tie between PSV and Sturm Graz in the play-off round.

“If they can find a way past the Swiss side over two legs then they will be just 180 minutes away from a place in the lucrative group stage of UEFA’s premier competition,” according to the Daily Record.

“A Euro jackpot of around £25million is the prize for reaching the group stage, a cheque they banked last year.”

Massive incentive

Rangers got their new Scottish Premiership season off to a simply shocking start as they lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday (5 August).

That very disappointing defeat was made much worse as fierce rivals Celtic were 4-2 winners in their clash with Ross County on the same day.

But Gers boss Beale perhaps won’t be looking too much into the league table at this very early stage of the season, particularly given how all focus must now be on European competition.

The Ibrox outfit have a huge first-leg clash at home to Servette on Wednesday (9 August), with a big win in Glasgow set to relieve some of the pressure on the man in the dugout.

That would make the return leg in Switzerland next Tuesday (15 August) much easier, especially given how Rangers have a league meeting with Livingston scheduled for Saturday (12 August), also at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, Champions League qualification is a must for the Gers as a 95% Old Firm statistic is revealed.
