Official Rangers partner destroys ‘absolutely atrocious’ moment v Kilmarnock

The Heart and Hand podcast has destroyed the defending on show as Rangers fell to a 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock on the opening day of the Scottish Premiership.

Michael Beale’s side started their 2023/24 campaign with a disappointing and lifeless defeat at Rugby Park, with Brad Lyons profiting from an “atrocious” piece of defending from John Souttar inside his own area to strike the winning goal past Jack Butland.

As a long throw came into the area, the Scottish defender seemed unable to get the ball out from under himself, failing to clear his lines and allowing Lyons to drive an effort into the back of the net and start the Light Blues’ season with a defeat.

The official Rangers partner wrote on Twitter: “Absolutely atrocious defending.”

More work to be done

It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that a team that has made nine signings this summer look fairly disjointed but Saturday’s defeat showed exactly how much work there is left to be done at Ibrox between now and the end of August.

New signings may not be the answer as the Rangers team at Rugby Park didn’t look like a united front, it appeared more like a team of individuals not quite sure how to play to one another’s strengths.

Rangers

Beale has suggested he wants to add more to his squad in this transfer window and if that is the case these additions have to come in defence, Souttar’s mistake was costly, but Borna Barisic looked just uncomfortable as his fellow defender every time he attempted to cross the ball.

We’re very sure Beale doesn’t need us to point out how costly Saturday’s defeat may prove to be despite it being so early on in the season, however, both he and those above him at Rangers have to view this as a shot across their bows.

Throughout any real cutting edge was absent in the final third, and a general slopiness at the back. Hopefully, this can be put right before Wednesday night’s Champions League qualifier against Servette.
