Alex Lowry set for Rangers loan exit to Hearts, due to join squad ahead of SPFL opener

Alex Lowry is “poised” to join Hearts on loan from Rangers ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season, according to Chris Jack.

The journalist reported on The Herald website on Friday (4 August) that the 20-year-old is set to join the Jambos after making just seven appearances for the Light Blues last season.

Rangers are expected to have a recall clause in the deal to bring the winger back to Ibrox if necessary from what will be his first loan move.

The signings of Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, Abdallah Sima and Danilo in forward positions are tipped to limit Lowry’s opportunities again, so he is now due to join up with the Hearts squad ahead of the beginning of the new campaign.

Right move

Lowry’s progress has badly stalled after he broke into the first team under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and impressed on the wing.

A needless injury picked up playing for the B team last season didn’t help, but after Michael Beale took over he didn’t seem ready to give the youngster more opportunities.

Ryan Kent left at the expiry of his contract along with Alfredo Morelos, Antonio Colak was sold, Malik Tillman’s left at the end of his loan, and Scott Wright is available to leave despite his move to Pendikspor in Turkey apparently breaking down [The 4th Official, 2 August].

Rangers

Fashion Sakala is also now in line to make an exit to Saudi Arabia [Herald, 2 August] but if Lowry is still behind all of the new signings and the likes of Ianis Hagi then he needs to leave for now to get some regular football.

A loan within the SPFL is a sensible decision as well to allow him to adapt to the league properly, and if he becomes an important player at Tynecastle he will then be missing for meetings with the Gers.

How he takes to the move remains to be seen, but development into a proven top flight performer ahead of an integration into Beale’s side next summer would be the ideal outcome from what looks to be a positive development at this stage.

In other Rangers news, the club have been backed to sign a “legend” to a contract who could then make an “impact” to the season.
