Rangers now want to sign Sam Field from QPR amid 20% clause

Rangers are interested in signing QPR midfielder Sam Field, according to BirminghamLive.

The website reported (2 August) that Field could be in line for a reunion with Michael Beale after the pair worked together at the West London side.

Any deal for Field would see his former club, West Brom, receive a portion of the fee after his 2021 transfer to QPR included a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

Reunion

While Field’s fee is currently unknown, he could make a great attrition to Ibrox.

Field has been full of praise for Beale in the past after the pair’s history at QPR. Beale clearly had a plan for Field’s development, but his return to Rangers saw this come to an end.

Speaking last summer (22 July), Field spoke highly of Beale when told QPR: “My first impressions are really good, he really knows his stuff. Training is really good, it’s really sharp and really intense and we are only two days in. We are all looking forward to working with him and hopefully, he is looking forward to working with us. It’s really promising.”

“He doesn’t see me as just a sitter, he wants me to be more box-to-box. If I can do that it will help everyone. It sounded really exciting what he is looking to do and I am looking forward to the next few weeks to really grasp what he wants from me and what he wants from the team as well.”

Rangers

So, Field is confident and comfortable under the management of Beale, and the pair seem to have mutual respect. But would he be ready for a step into regular game time at Rangers?

He was an ever-present for QPR in the last campaign under manager Gareth Ainsworth, playing 44 games. However, the Hoops had a torrid time last season after Beale’s departure and slipped from playoff hopes to relegation fears.

While those fears were not quite realised, it does show the impact Beale had at QPR and he could rekindle that form for Field in Glasgow.

Field can boast some reassuring stats that reflect his defensive solidity. With 1.83 tackles per 90 (90th percentile), 1.96 blocks per 90 (98th percentile) and 2.58 clearances per 90 (98th percentile) [FBRef], Field could clearly make an impact under Beale.

Rangers are also facing a defender shortage and a lack of quality reinforcements at centre-back. While Leon Balogun’s free deal added valuable experience, his age, 35, prevents him from being a long-term option.

At just 25, Field could fill this void for Beale if he can replicate this form.

In other Rangers news, according to Sky Sports, it is only a matter of time before an Ibrox champion departs Glasgow.
