Rangers in discussions with Steven Davis over the midfielder signing new deal to remain at Ibrox

Rangers are in discussions with Steven Davis over the midfielder potentially signing a new contract at Ibrox.

The 38-year-old’s deal expired at the end of last season after his campaign was cut short due to him suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in December.

But as the Northern Irish midfielder continues his rehab, he told BelfastLive on 29 July that he has been in talks with the Gers about possibly extending his contract as the start of the new season approaches.

“There’s been discussions in the background with Rangers but nothing really nailed down at any point,” said Davis.

“The club is very open to having that conversation I believe but it’s just important that I focus on rehab at this minute in time to give myself an opportunity to try and play.

“I think whenever I do call it a day that will be the time to see what doors open and what opportunities arise.”

Invaluable experience

It’s no real surprise to hear that Rangers are potentially keen to keep Davis in Glasgow even with his injury, given that he has been a great servant and has an awful lot of experience to pass on.

During his two spells at Ibrox, he’s played 360 times for the club, scoring 27 goals and laying on 70 assists across a number of huge games.

He featured 16 times before he was struck down with his nasty injury at the back end of last year and has been doing all he can to try and get back fit to be able to help his teammates on the pitch.

Davis is certainly the kind of character Michael Beale will want to keep around the place and he will have something to offer, whether that is in a playing capacity or a potential coaching role if that opportunity presents itself.

It’s hard to imagine that once he is back up to full fitness that there won’t be something on offer for him at Rangers after all he’s given to the club over the years.
