Cyriel Dessers makes Danilo promise after Rangers friendly draw

Cyriel Dessers has tipped new Rangers signing Danilo to be a success at the club and believes the pair could make a good partnership.

The Nigeria international, who joined the Gers from Serie B side Cremonese this summer, described his potential new forward partner in an interview with the Daily Record as a “great striker”.

That was after the Brazilian made his debut in the 2-2 draw with Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim on 29 July, where he came on to replace Dessers after completing his move from Feyenoord on 28 July.

“We could work together,” said Dessers. “He’s a great striker. I played a lot against him in the Netherlands so I know him as a player. When you play at a top club there will always be competition. Danilo and I need to make each other stronger. But it could be a partnership.

“I don’t want to tell everyone the plans of the coach but we could play together. I watched a lot of Feyenoord games last season and Danilo will bring goals to Rangers. He’s good in the combinations and can provide assists as well. Not all strikers can do that but he can.”

An option

It sounds as though Dessers really does rate Danilo highly after seeing him play on a regular basis for Feyenoord and getting a brief glimpse of him during his Rangers debut against Hoffenheim.

The forward clearly believes the duo could play together and complement each other as they both attempt to have a successful first season in Glasgow and look to help the side challenge for silverware.

It will probably be something Michael Beale does try out at some point to see if the pair can play together, but there’s a good chance it will be one or the other to begin with.

Danilo certainly hasn’t made the move from the Dutch champions to be sitting around on the bench, so Dessers is really going to have to show why he should be starting whenever he gets opportunities.

It is healthy to have competition, though, and it sounds as though the striker is looking forward to competing for a place in the side and he’ll be hoping to be a regular fixture on the scoresheet.

In other Rangers news, an official club partner was left fuming after one player’s performance against Hoffenheim.
