Rangers confirm 15% sell-on clause for Dire Mebude as Manchester City exit nears

Rangers are due a 15% sell-on clause for former Ibrox academy starlet Dire Mebude as he closes in on a Manchester City exit this summer, according to Four Lads Had a Dream.

Mebude, who moved to City’s academy three years ago from Rangers and formed a key part of the Under-21 side that won their league for the third year in a row, is close to signing for Belgian club Westerlo in a deal worth up to £1.65m.

And in a tweet by official Rangers partner Four Lads (26 July), the Gers have confirmed to them that they are due a 15% sell-on windfall from Manchester City’s sale.

They tweeted: “Few questions surrounding Dire Mebude and a sell-on fee from Man City.

“Rangers have confirmed we have a sell-on of 15%.”

Boost

Given the unique and terrific qualities of Mebude, it was absolutely imperative Rangers ensured they got something out of any potential deal for the youngster when they sold him to the Premier League champions.

City have an established and flawless young academy team which means most of their players are always going to attract interest from teams around Europe and Mebude was certainly amongst that list.

While the £247,500 may not be enough to secure a future addition at Ibrox, it still represents a much-needed cash boost to their bank which could certainly be spent in other areas.

Rangers certainly possess a talented and decorated academy of their own and much of that money could well be used to enhance the facilities and coaching quality of their youth sides and ensure that they are competing with some of the best academies on the continent.

Maybe next time, they won’t be forced to sell some of their biggest academy products but also possess the lure and class to keep them at the club when the top clubs come calling. That’s surely the next step for the Light Blues.
