Rangers could miss out on transfer windfall as Fulham stall over deal for Calvin Bassey

Fulham’s deal for ex-Rangers star Calvin Bassey has stalled as the club debate whether to press ahead with his signing or to go for Mohammed Salisu, according to the Daily Record.

The Daily Record shared via their website on 24 July that Fulham have taken the decision to sign just one left-footed defender this summer, meaning they will make a decision between Bassey and Salisu. This could see Rangers miss out on a potential transfer windfall from a sell-on clause in Bassey’s contract.

Should the deal for Bassey go through, Rangers would benefit from having agreed a clause when the player moved to Ajax which would entitle the Glasgow side to 10% of any future transfer fee the club receive for the Nigerian, although there are suggestions that is only on any profit made.

Rangers could miss out

When Bassey swapped Glasgow for Amsterdam in 2022, few expected him to return to Britain quite as soon as he appears to be. For Rangers to have been given the possibility of making a bit of extra cash from the deal, only for it to be cancelled at the last minute, will be disappointing.

Rangers have seen plenty of incoming deals arrive this summer, with more still expected to come, so any additional budget injected into the club would be a welcome source of income as it would go towards balancing the books.

The club will need to sell players this summer to supplement the amount they are sending on incoming signings, with financial fair play always a concern, as well as the possibility of overspending on an ever-inflating squad.

The club will be disappointed if they miss out on this potential seven-figure transfer windfall, but should not rely on it as a source of income no matter how likely they feel a deal for Bassey may be, with Brighton linked as well as Fulham this summer.

In other Rangers news, the club may look to sign a different striker despite the Danilo deal progressing.
