Former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield believes Nico Raskin is captain material

Former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield has told the Daily Record that Nico Raskin is future club captain material in a new interview.

Arfield, who departed the club to join MLS club Charlotte FC this summer, was able to view Michale Beale’s Rangers revolution first-hand and discussed the importance of Raskin and Todd Cantwell to the turnaround at Ibrox.

Raskin in particular is viewed as being James Tavernier’s successor, the next to wear the prestigious Rangers’ captain’s armband. The Belgian midfielder joined Beale’s side in January from Standard Liege and managed to immediately impress at the heart of the Rangers midfield.

Discussing his former teammates’ skills, Arfield said to the Daily Record: “Todd was probably more in the public eye playing in England. But in terms of Nico, in his first two training sessions, he was sensational.

“You could see that he is built to play at a club the size of Rangers. I can see him playing there for years. He is captain material. Even at such a young age, you can really lean on him.

“He takes the ball, he is comfortable with the ball, he has a great temperament in the middle of the pitch. He is a fantastic acquisition.”

Centre of something special

There is a sense that Michael Beale is creating something very special at Ibrox at the moment and while it may only be a start and there is plenty more work yet to be done in the hunt to catch Celtic and win the Scottish Premiership.

Raskin is at the heart of that evolution, alongside Cantwell and although Arfield is looking at his standing from a more than biased position as a former Rangers player, he is a sort of talent that a lot of clubs in Europe would be hoping to have at their disposal.

There are few better judges of players’ ability than their teammates, with Arfield able to watch the likes of Cantwell and Raskin day in and day out he is probably the best judge of how good the pair can be in comparison to what he has previously seen in his long career.

What makes the Belgian midfielder even more exciting is the fact he is demonstrating this level of leadership at only 22 years old, if Arfield is correct and he does end up playing at Ibrox for many years to come, he could create a genuine legacy at one of the most historic clubs in the world.
