Barry Ferguson shares what Michael Beale will have told every new Rangers summer signing

Barry Ferguson believes Michael Beale has told every Rangers summer signing to take a leaf out of Allan McGregor’s book.

Former Gers midfielder Ferguson noted the new players at the club should love winning and hate losing as much as McGregor did during his time at Ibrox.

The goalkeeper left Rangers earlier this summer upon the expiry of his contract, and was handed a testimonial against Newcastle United on Tuesday (18 July), which the Gers lost 2-1.

“Put it this way, if you have 11 guys out there who love winning – and hate losing – as much as McGregor then you’ll have one helluva chance of picking up some silverware,” Ferguson wrote for the Daily Record.

“That’s what it’s all about, every time you pull that shirt over your head. And that’s the message Michael Beale will have been drumming into the new recruits ever since they signed on the dotted line.”

Winning mentality needed

A winning mentality has always been needed at Rangers, but it has been lacking in recent times, particularly following the exit of Steven Gerrard from the Ibrox dugout.

Beale has come in, and while the manager cannot be faulted too much for his results so far, it still hasn’t been at the level that the club need to challenge fierce rivals Celtic in all competitions.

The Bhoys, like Rangers, are going through a transition phase, with Brendan Rodgers returning to the Celtic Park dugout following the departure of Ange Postecoglou to Tottenham.

It should throw the club into some form of disarray, which will be welcome news to Beale and Rangers after they fell well short of their rivals last time out.

The Gers boss must motivate his players in the upcoming season, and that won’t be easy given how so many of them are new to the club and new to Scottish football.

In other Rangers news, one Gers ace played a key role in helping secure one of the club’s summer signings.
