Rangers transfer news as Lewis Mayo seals permanent Ibrox exit

Defender Lewis Mayo has quit Rangers permanently to join Scottish side Kilmarnock for an undisclosed fee after his loan spell there.

Gers confirmed this news on their official website [20 July] and thanked the 23-year-old for his services to the club.

Mayo joined Rangers at the age of seven and climbed up the ranks to become a first-team player at Ibrox.

Right move?

Mayo went on multiple loan spells and while he showed that he can operate at an SPFL level, it’s evident that he’s not ready to be a first-team player.

It remains to be seen how much Rangers got from his sale but it was important that they got rid of him as he just did not progress enough.

Another loan spell is unlikely to change too much so it made sense to part ways with him permanently.

A few years ago, he looked like someone who had the potential to become a first-team regular, but that certainly did not happen.

In 2019, he had then manager Steven Gerrard waxing lyrical over him and it seemed that Mayo was on the track to becoming a first team player soon.

He said, via Football Scotland, “What a fantastic day for Lewis Mayo. I say to all the academy lads, you’ll get an opportunity somewhere down the line so take it. He’s taken it today and showed what he’s capable of.

“You can see he’s still a boy and there’s a lot of development to do, but the academy have done a good job on him.”

In other Rangers news, the club are now battling an English side for the services of an Arsenal player set to leave this summer.
