Rangers may regret missing out on Morgan Whittaker after £1m plus add-ons transfer is completed

Rangers have been extremely busy in the transfer market already this summer.

Indeed, seven new faces are already in the door this window and more could yet arrive before the new season begins.

But it is a signing that has taken place right down the other end of the United Kingdom in Plymouth that Michael Beale may live to regret.

It was confirmed by Plymouth Argyle on Monday that versatile forward Morgan Whittaker has joined on a four-year deal from Swansea City in a club-record deal.

Wales Online journalist Tom Coleman reported that the fee will be around £1million plus add-ons.

At that price and aged only 22, it seems like Rangers may have missed a trick by not following up on an interest in Whittaker, which was first reported by Wales Online way back on 16 January.

Admittedly, the loan signing of Abdallah Sima may have pushed the necessity to bring Whittaker to Ibrox down the pecking order, but that deal is only temporary while Whittaker would have been a permanent signing.

Moreover, it would have been a signing with significant potential, either to star in the Scottish Premiership or to sell on at a significant profit.

Plymouth, of course, offers some familiarity to Whittaker. He scored nine goals in 25 League One appearances in a loan spell at Home Park last season before being recalled.

Whittaker netted only once in 15 Championship outings after that for Swansea but only two of those were as a starter, and Plymouth – promoted to the second tier as champions last season – may have secured a real bargain signing.

It is to be hoped that Rangers and Beale do not live to regret this one.
