Rangers transfer news as Cyriel Dessers back to be dangerous in Alfredo Morelos verdict

New Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers will be “dangerous” this season if his claims of being at his peak are accurate, according to journalist Craig Swan in the Daily Record [page 49].

Dessers said after arriving at Rangers that he is “at his peak”, although Swan admitted it would be a tough ask for the new forward to fill the void left by Alfredo Morelos at Ibrox.

When asked whether Dessers could fill the void the Colombian has left, Swan said: “Fit or not, Morelos scored a lot of goals. Tough task [for Dessers to replace him].”

Dessers will need to get back to his old ways

If the striker’s claims to be hitting his peak are accurate, Rangers fans will be hoping he can get the sort of return he showed at previous clubs, rather than that he displayed at Cremonese in Serie A last year.

The Italian side struggled in the league, and thus struggled for goals, with Dessers only managing seven goals in 29 appearances for the club. The Nigerian has shown better goalscoring form with previous clubs, as he scored ten goals from just 13 Europa Conference League games while on loan at Feyenoord, and got nine from 27 in the Eredivisie.

Prior to that, he had scored just four goals in 28 Belgian Pro League appearances for Genk in the 2020/21 season, after signing from Dutch side Heracles, with whom Dessers scored 15 goals and bagged five assists in 26 appearances during 2019/20.

It ultimately remains to be seen whether Dessers can cut it outside of the Eredivisie, with both spells abroad ending in failure, but Rangers and Michael Beale clearly believe in their new man.

In other Rangers news, the club are locked in £1.2million talks with midfielder as Beale wants cash to fly.
