Rangers fan-favourite Ianis Hagi needs a big season to secure his place at Ibrox

Rangers attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi has been on the fringes at Rangers lately following a terrible injury and will need a big season if he is to secure his place at Ibrox into the future.

Hagi has struggled to make his mark at Rangers in the last couple of seasons, due to a string of injury issues which have seen the Romanian make just 22 league appearances across the last two seasons. Hagi was forced to have surgery on his knee which kept him out for 371 days between 21 January 2022 and 27 January 2023 [Transfermarkt].

Following rumours surrounding a move away from Ibrox, the fan-favourite issued a statement in which he detailed how much he loves the club and loves being there, while understanding that he will need a really strong pre-season to get back to his best.

The club have also shown faith in Hagi, after handing him a new contract in December despite his injury issues. This show of faith should be used as inspiration for the Romanian as he looks to get back to the form he showed before his injury.

In the 2020/21 season, Hagi made 32 league appearances for the Glasgow side, scoring seven goals and registering 12 assists, while also contributing one goal to their Europa League campaign – a free-kick against Braga which will live long in the memory of supporters.

It is no doubt that Rangers fans would love to see another season of this calibre from a player who has certainly shown he is capable, with his commitment and love for the club a perfect bonus on top of his skill and talent.

It must be said however, that if Hagi’s season is once again blighted by inconsistency and injuries, he should be amongst the names looking to leave, as being a fans-favourite should not sway the view of the club whose primary focus is the long-term success of the team.

In other Rangers news, one player has made his intentions to join the Glasgow side clear.
