Rangers fall behind in transfer race for Luis Palma as AEK Athens make move

Rangers have fallen behind in the race for winger Luis Palma as AEK Athens are now considered the leaders to sign him, according to Giannis Chorianopoulous.

The Gers tabled a bid for the Honduras international earlier this summer but saw it rejected and have since seen their chase for him go cold as they focused on other targets.

But after reports that they hadn’t given up hope on signing him in a £4.4m deal, it’s now been reported that Greek champions AEK Athens are at the front of the queue for his signature.

“Greek champions and cup winners AEK Athens are now leading the race to sign Luis Palma from Aris Thessaloniki,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (29 June).

No shock

It seems quite clear now that Rangers have moved on from the chase for Palma and are instead targeting alternative targets.

Sam Lammers has already signed, while Abdallah Sima is close to joining and the club are still being linked with moves for Danilo and Cyriel Dessers.

It’s unlikely that all of those will put pen to paper this summer, but it’s fair to say that at least two of the three will and that leaves very little room for Palma to then join too.

Rangers have a clear plan in mind for how the squad wants to look next season and Michael Beale has been adamant that the club will be ready to compete with Celtic for the title and cups.

Palma looks likely to be going elsewhere now and while fans were excited about the potential signing, Rangers fans didn’t know of him before the links in the summer and it’ll be too hard to miss him if we get other targets instead.
