Todd Cantwell baits ‘troll’ Chris Sutton into heated Rangers transfer and Celtic spat, manages to insult Norwich in the process

Todd Cantwell turned the tables on Chris Sutton in a late night Twitter spat on Tuesday (27 June) after goading the pundit into a reaction to continue their ongoing rivalry.

The two former Norwich players now find themselves firmly on opposite sides of the Old Firm divide and the ex-Celtic striker took various opportunities through last season to mock the Ibrox midfielder.

But he didn’t seem to like the 25-year-old doing the same in return as he responded to a one-line dig with an angry response that apparently was the reaction Cantwell was aiming for, but also caught the Canaries in the crossfire.

Responding to a Football Scotland post about the best pundit in Scottish football the Gers ace posted on his personal Twitter: “I can tell you isn’t Chris Sutton”.

His fellow ex-Norwich player took the bait and replied: “Here is some balanced factual punditry from last season TikTok you may not enjoy…you joined Rangers on a free from the Championship and lost every meaningful game against Celtic and won nothing”.

So the Rangers midfielder posted in response: “Twitter troll has his notifications on then,” along with a fishing emoji.

Caught out

Sutton is never afraid to wind up his opponents or anyone that criticises him, and in fairness it is largely clear that it is tongue in cheek.

The new Sky Sports pundit [Glasgow Times, 5 June] didn’t seem anywhere near as composed in response to Cantwell this time around, and based on the Rangers man’s last response it was what he had hoped for.

It seems like a fairly obvious joke for the January signing to make that he doesn’t rate Sutton as a pundit, due to the fairly public rivalry.

Rangers

But the former Celtic striker didn’t seem to take it in jest at all, and decided to react about Cantwell’s transfer while managing to hit his beloved Norwich with some friendly fire in the process, since being in the Championship was an insult and that is where the English side remain.

Micheal Beale’s first signing as Rangers boss indeed hasn’t won anything yet but he was the star in the most recent Old Firm derby, where he scored in a 3-0 win, so how next season starts will now be key.

Ange Postecoglou is gone and Brendan Rodgers is back, so if Beale gets it right over the summer and the likes of Cantwell can keep up the form that he ended the season with it should be much more even next term.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are set to seal a “coup” in the transfer market which has one journalist “pretty excited”.
