Rangers remain big fans of Morgan Whittaker despite Coventry and Plymouth transfer interest

Rangers remain “big fans” of Swansea City striker Morgan Whittaker this summer despite competition from both Coventry City and Plymouth Argyle, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.

The Daily Record reported on 5 June that Rangers were locked in fresh talks about bringing Whittaker to Ibrox this summer, but they will now face competition from two clubs in the EFL.

“Coventry will target Swansea striker Morgan Whittaker to replace Victor Gyokores with the in-demand Swede set to leave this summer,” Witcoop wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“Glasgow Rangers and Plymouth remain big fans of Whittaker but Coventry now have their eye on the frontman.”

Great option

Whittaker has long been seen as a brilliant option for Rangers to pursue in the summer transfer window, and now that the Swansea City vacant managerial position has been filled by Michael Duff, proceedings should be able to move forward swiftly.

Football Scotland previously reported that the Gers faced a delay in brokering a deal for Whittaker after Russell Martin had left the Welsh club to join Southampton as manager.

However, with this roadblock now dealt with, Michael Beale will want to press forward and add another attacking addition to join Sam Hammers in his ranks.

Whittaker is currently hot property in the English Football League after his stunning loan spell at Plymouth that saw him net nine goals and provide seven assists from 25 outings in League One.

He didn’t quite kick after returning to Swansea in the January transfer window, where he was awarded a mere 425 minutes of Championship action, so a move could certainly still be on the cards this summer.

In other Rangers news, the club are now close to sealing another major signing after the announcement of Sam Lammers in their biggest acquisition of the summer window.
