Done deal: Rangers complete Mateusz Zukowski sale as fee agreed for Ibrox exit

Mateusz Zukowski has left Rangers to join Slask Wroclaw subject to international clearance, the club confirmed on their official website.

The Polish full-back made the move to Ibrox from Lechia Gdansk in January 2022 but made just one appearance for the club.

He spent last season on loan at Lech Poznan and now becomes Rangers’ first sale of the summer.

Rangers wrote: “Rangers can today confirm that Mateusz Zukowski has joined Slask Wroclaw for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

“Everyone at the club wishes Mateusz the very best of luck for the future.”

An inevitable departure

Zukowski reportedly cost Rangers around £400,000 (Daily Record) when he arrived at Ibrox around 18 months ago.

But first-team opportunities never materialised and he was restricted to a solitary Scottish Cup appearance for the Gers.

With James Tavernier having long since locked in the right-back spot as his own, it was always going to be tricky for Zukowski to break into the starting XI.

Moreover, he was not Michael Beale’s signed, he was brought into the club by his predecessor Giovanni van Bronckhorst, so his chances were even slimmer.

Throw in the fact that Dujon Sterling is to arrive on 1 July on a free transfer from Chelsea and, well, the writing could scarcely be written any clearer on the wall.

Which is why it makes sense for Zukowski to return to his native Poland and try and get some regular first-team minutes under his belt. And he does so with the best wishes of everyone at Rangers.
