Charlie Lindsay confirms ‘big’ English interest after confirmed Rangers exit

Charlie Lindsay has confirmed that there is interest from “big clubs in England” as he eyes his next move after leaving Rangers.

The attacking midfielder was a key man for the Light Blues reserve side last season but his exit from the club was confirmed on 1 June in a group of youngsters that included Kai Kennedy.

The 19-year-old admitted that “scoring and setting up goals for Rangers at any level is great” but now wants to push for a first-team role at his next club.

The teenager said, via the Daily Record: “I just want to go to a club who are ambitious because I want to kick on. There is some interest from some big clubs in England, so we will see what develops.

“It is nice to hear there is interest but you can’t look into that too much. I just need to keep working hard. I have been training hard to make sure I am in the best shape wherever I end up next season.

“I want to push to get first-team minutes and to keep getting better as a player and a person. I just want to keep my career going forward.

“I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot and I feel I have really progressed in my time with the club. I was able to pick up some great experiences there.

“I learned under some top coaches and managers and played and trained with some unbelievable players. It will stand me in good stead for the new season. I feel I am an all-rounded player and I am ready to take the next step in my career.”

Next step

Competition is fierce at a club the size of Rangers at any time so it is always a huge challenge for youngsters to break through.

There hasn’t been enough of it from the academy and B teams to the senior set up of late, and if the likes of Lindsay go on to perform well elsewhere it would represent a missed opportunity.

Leon King and Adam Devine are listed in the first-team squad on the club’s website along with Robby McCrorie, but the goalkeeper is 25 and only just getting meaningful opportunities, while the central defender was rarely seen once Michael Beale took over and the full-back only got a short burst of games in the manager’s early matches.

Alex Lowry is also a first-team player but after looking sharp the season before last under Giovanni van Bronckhorst appears to have regressed since suffering a Lowland League injury.

Lindsay looks to have takers despite being let go by Rangers, as most players do when they leave the club, so he may be set for a decent career.

But with Beale currently scouring the transfer market for signings to add to his summer overhaul it would be a boost if he could draw more on the academy set up.

In other Rangers news, the fifth senior signing of the window is now on the cards for this week.
