Rangers main reason behind ‘statement of intent’ by Euro billionaire – Sky Sports pundit

Rangers are the main reason that Celtic chief Dermot Desmond brought back manager Brendan Rodgers, according to Kris Boyd.

The pundit believes that the billionaire chief sees the Gers as a threat, appointing Rodgers to ensure Celtic continue their domestic domination.

As confirmed by the official Celtic website, Rodgers was appointed as the club’s new manager on Monday (19 June) after Ange Postecoglou left for Tottenham.

“For me, the return of Rodgers is actually a statement of intent on the home front,” Boyd wrote for The Scottish Sun. “Of course, Celtic can’t come out and say that – but all they are really concerned about is continuing their domestic domination.

“They have ruled the roost for a long period now and they want to keep it going. Dermot Desmond clearly sees Michael Beale’s Rangers side as a threat. Rangers are improving and they will be more of a force going forward.

“That is arguably the main reason Desmond decided, no matter what, he would go back to an old friend. The Irishman has not made billions without being a shrewd businessman.”

Super appointment

Rodgers definitely won’t be listening to much outside noise upon his return to Celtic, with the manager only focusing on getting to know his new squad and preparing to hit the ground running in the new campaign.

He is clearly a very talented manager, with previous success in Scotland and England, where he guided Celtic and Leicester City to several trophies.

The Northern Irishman led the Foxes to their first ever FA Cup victory after winning consecutive domestic trebles with the Bhoys, with the club remaining undefeated for an entire season while he was in charge.

All of that should provide Celtic fans with plenty of confidence that he is the right man to take over from Postecoglou, even if there is a section of supporters who haven’t quite forgiven Rodgers for leaving not so long ago.

They won’t want to admit it, but his appointment will also strike fear into some Rangers fans, with many of the Ibrox faithful fully aware of how far the manager can take his beloved club.
