Charlie Adam backs more Calvin Bassey-like transfers at Rangers this summer

Charlie Adam has backed Michael Beale as Rangers kicked off their summer transfer window with numerous free moves at Ibrox.

Kieran Dowell from Norwich, Dujon Sterling from Chelsea and Jack Butland from Crystal Palace have all recently made the move up north with a combined transfer fee of zero.

It is a promising start for Beale and his recruitment team looking ahead to next season and gives an inclination to the smart business plans at the club, with more Calvin Bassey-like moves on the cards.

Adam told Football Scotland: “If you can get free transfers and there’s an opportunity to bring them in, footballing-wise that’s not a problem. I’ve seen them all. Going and playing in front of 50,000 and demanding success, demanding wins is a little bit different so they’ll have to get used to that.

“It’s a model Rangers have had success before in. Bringing players in and selling them, look at Calvin Bassey bringing him in cheap and selling him.

“It’s a market they’ve done well in and they’ll try and do it again.”

Although, Beale hasn’t shied away from splashing the cash when Sam Lammers was bought in just over a week ago for £3 million from Sampdoria. And, there will have to be more of that over the summer if Beale wants to strengthen his squad depth, particularly up front.

Free Agents Galore

Rangers fell behind Celtic in terms of recruitment last summer and this time out it could be free agents that solidify Beale’s team for the 2023-24 season.

Josh Maja, who made his name in league one with 15 goals in 24 league games, is a talented striker that is reportedly on Beale’s radar. After playing for Bordeaux last season, the 24-year-old is now a free man being available to clubs without a fee.

With a proven success that free agents work well at Rangers, it wouldn’t be a foolish idea for Beale to continue hunting the free agent market and using it to his advantage.

With the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent moving on though, that has freed up a lot of funds for John Bennett to splash if he wants to make cash available.

The Bears moved very quickly to secure their key targets for free, and now it gives them the rest of the window to bring in even bigger names with price tags attached to them.

All eyes are on Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, the club are now close to sealing another major signing after the announcement of Sam Lammers in their biggest acquisition of the summer window.
