Jacqui Oatley wowed by ‘great appointment’ for Rangers Women manager role

BBC Sport’s Jacqui Oatley has praised Rangers’ appointment of Jo Potter as head coach of the Women’s first team, as posted to her Twitter account on Thursday afternoon.

She commented shortly after the official announcement from the club, which is the second senior position to be filled at Ibrox today after Zeb Jacobs was confirmed as the new academy director.

As a player, Potter was capped for England 35 times and most recently, she was at Birmingham City as assistant manager.

News of the appointment spread quickly online with Oatley, who also commentates for Sky Sports Women’s Super League coverage, sharing her approval.

“Great appointment by Rangers Women,” she said.

“Jo Potter has been a manager in the making for a very long time. Expecting her/them to do well.”

Positive step

With Malky Thomson moving back to his role within the men’s academy, the women’s head coach role was vacant and ready for a candidate to come in and progress the team.

With the resources Rangers have utilised on the Women’s side, the outcomes have not been quite as expected so there is plenty of scope for growth for Potter.

She appears to be a highly-rated coach, following her exploits with the Lionesses in her playing days so the experience gained overall through the Women’s set-up in England should put her in a good place to thrive at Rangers.

After losing out on the title, as well as Champions League participation, to Glasgow City and Celtic, the minimum for Potter will be to ensure a top-two finish but regaining the league crown has to be the objective as well as pushing for the cups.

Last season, Rangers Women won the Sky Sports League Cup but lost out on the Scottish Cup to Celtic.

In other Rangers news, Ibrox chiefs are ready to wrap up their next bit of transfer business now the international window is over.
