Rangers transfer news: Malik Tillman ‘really didn’t want to come’ as Bayern pay £1m compensation

Rangers had little chance of signing Malik Tillman again because he “really didn’t want to come”, according to The 4th Official.

Kicker reported over the weekend (18 June) that Bayern Munich had cancelled the permanent option in the previously agreed deal that sent the 21-year-old to Ibrox for the season, but suggested a Glasgow return remained on the cards.

Rangers Review then followed up on Tuesday (20 June) to report that Tillman would not be back at Rangers but that the club were in line for a cash boost of at least £2million, in the form of a £1million compensation fee for the cancelled terms and 10% of any sale price this summer, with a move predicted to go through for £10million or more.

And it seems that it is doubly beneficial for the Light Blues because the attacking midfielder never had any intention of returning to the club.

In response to the American’s intentions being disputed T4O wrote on Twitter: “But he really didn’t want to come.

“Unfortunate but I can definitely see it from his perspective.”

Tillman did a good job for Rangers on loan and picked up the PFA Young Player of the Season award as a result, but when there is reported interest from the English top flight [Daily Mail, 12 June] the Gers were always going to struggle win the race to bring him back.

Getting nine figures income out of the equation makes the disappointment of seeing him go far easier as it had already become clear a return was unlikely.

Micheal Beale has plenty more yet to do in this window, so if the £1million payment is made available for his transfer budget, and anything else that subsequently arrives if Tillman moves again, it could prove crucial.

Rangers

He will need to bring extra firepower into the attack having lost Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, with just Sam Lammers signed in that department so far.

Tillman’s own 12 goals and five assists across all competitions will need replacing as well, although the hope presumably is for Todd Cantwell to make up for a certain amount of it.

Ultimately the Bayern man’s year on loan in Glasgow was pretty successful, even if the club’s campaign wasn’t up to scratch, and while he isn’t coming back the outcome looks like it works out fairly well for all parties.

In other Rangers news, an update has shared the level of Ibrox interest in a linked attacker who had a dramatic role for his country during the latest internationals.
