Rangers to sign ‘dominant’ midfielder as competition mooted at Ibrox

Barry Ferguson expects Rangers to sign a “dominant midfielder” during the summer transfer window.

Scott Arfield has already departed Ibrox and Glen Kamara could follow the 34-year-old after being linked with a summer exit.

Ferguson believes Michael Beale will look to bring in a central player before the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

“I think he will look to bring in a real, dominant midfielder. He obviously needs another number nine and there are other areas you can look to go and get a bit of competition,” Ferguson told Go Radio (quoted by The Daily Record, 19 June).

Needed

Another midfielder is certainly required.

Jose Cifuentes has been heavily linked with a move to Ibrox. The LAFC midfielder has been a standout for the MLS side and could move on a cut-price deal when his contract expires at the turn of the year. At present, the Gers are still in talks over a deal for the 24-year-old.

Football Scotland report on 20 June that a deal could well be struck in July. He would certainly add the “dominant” edge Ferguson is after.

Rangers

Beale must be delighted with how his summer business has gone to date. Sam Lammers, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland and Kieran Dowell have already come through the front door at Ibrox and there should be more to follow.

Another midfielder, striker and winger have to be top of the agenda for Beale. Furthermore, another central defender could well be on the agenda.

Ben Davies has been a largely disappointing addition and behind Connor Goldson and John Souttar, there isn’t too much in the way of squad depth.
