Graeme Souness shares Rangers worry live on talkSPORT after what Jim White said

Rangers legend Graeme Souness is concerned Celtic have offered Brendan Rodgers assurances over the budget he will have to spend after returning to the Bhoys.

Ange Postecoglou’s departure for Tottenham paved the way for Rodgers to return to Celtic Park on a three-year deal, after he first departed the club back in February 2019 having won back-to-back trebles during his first stint.

Rangers accrued 92 points in the Scottish Premiership and are undergoing a heavy recruitment drive under Michael Beale, but Souness voiced his worries when asked about the appointment by Jim White on talkSPORT.

“Only Brendan can answer that [if it’s a good move] but I tell you what it does, because obviously my focus is on the other side of Glasgow,” he began.

“I think Brendan in going back, this is a worry for me as Rangers fan, is he’s asked for assurances in terms of budgets, what he’s going to spend, how much he can spend.

“Because I’m sure Brendan, if he’d have sat [and waited], he’d have got other offers in England, maybe not in the Premier League but the top end of the Championship.

“So it worries me slightly he’s gone back there for that fact only, promises will be made to him about budgets, what he can spend. That ain’t good news for Rangers.”

Rodgers’ return sets up mouth-watering Old Firm battle

It is a shame in one way that we won’t get to see Michael Beale go toe-to-toe over the course of a full season with Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian dominated during his two years in charge but a rebuilding job under Beale led to an intriguing prospect next term.

Postecoglou’s departure for Spurs robs us of that battle but boy do we have something to sink our teeth into next term with the Old Firm.

No one could stop Rodgers’ Celtic the first time around, literally no one in his first campaign one that saw Celtic go unbeaten domestically.

But there is a different feel about Rangers under Beale, and a sense that there is a new dawn at Ibrox. Souness is right as a fan to be concerned about what assurances Rodgers has been given in terms of cash, but Beale versus Rodgers is a battle to really set the juices flowing ahead of next season.

In other Rangers news, one transfer target will not be making the move to Ibrox this summer.
