Barry Ferguson in awe of Cyriel Dessers as Rangers close in on £5m transfer

Barry Ferguson has been impressed by what he’s seen of Cyriel Dessers as Rangers close in a move for the 28-year-old Cremonese striker.

According to the Daily Record (12 June), the Gers are looking to land another striker after Sam Lammers’ arrival from Atalanta. Dessers is believed to be on the club’s radar, with a £5million deal in the offing.

Writing in his latest column for the Daily Record, Ferguson has liked what he’s seen from the Nigerian.

Rangers

“There’s also plenty of talk about Cyriel Dessers coming in,” said Ferguson.

“Again, like Lammers, he will be a name that’s not particularly well known to people but since being linked with them I’ve been doing a bit of research and I like what I’ve seen and read.

“Neither of them have prolific scoring records in Italy, where they’ve been playing of late, but Serie A and Serie B are tough places to get on the scoresheet with the style of play generally more suited to stopping the opposition from making and taking chances.”

Reserve judgement

As is the case with any new transfer, it’s always important to reserve judgement until he’s actually performed on the pitch. On the face of it, Dessers looks like an experienced frontman who could well make an impact at Ibrox. However, the same can be said for Antonio Colak before his move to Scotland.

The Croatian’s record last season was decent, but, on the whole, it’s fair to say he’s been a disappointing addition. A summer exit would not be out of the equation.

Rangers

With Lammers already coming through the door and Dessers potentially on his way, Colak’s opportunities could well be few and far between. Michael Beale has been extremely busy in the market and he will have to start sanctioning exits soon.

The free agents have all departed, but the likes of Colak, Glen Kamara and Ben Davies all remain. Two or three exits will have to occur to prevent the squad from becoming far too bloated.

In other Rangers news, a pundit has claimed that the Ibrox faithful will love this attacker at the club as Rangers are closing in on another signing.
