Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo Rangers transfer ‘not imminent’ despite reports – Chris Jack

Rangers are still working to sign Jonathan Panzo from Nottingham Forest but a deal is “not imminent” despite reports, according to Chris Jack.

Michael Beale wants to add further depth to his squad this summer after allowing Filip Helander to leave on a free transfer, while the future of Ben Davies has also been discussed, and Panzo has emerged as a top target for the centre-back spot.

But after reports that a £2.5m deal had been struck [Daily Record, 11 June] and a deal was close to being done, Jack wrote in The Herald (12 June) that is wide of the mark.

“There is still work to be done to land defender Jonathan Panzo,” he wrote.

“It is understood a deal for the Nottingham Forest defender is not imminent as Beale bids to add further strength and depth to his squad following the arrivals of Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling and Jack Butland already this summer.”

Push

Rangers are clearly really going for it in this transfer window, just like Beale promised us, and it’s great to see.

Three signings have already been confirmed and many more are expected, with Jack himself admitting the club are eyeing a treble signing this week, but Panzo isn’t really one of them.

A talented centre-back with plenty of room for development and to be coached, he would slot in perfectly in this squad under the tutelage of Connor Goldson and alongside the likes of John Souttar and Davies in those positions.

But it seems that some reporters and fans got a bit carried away with this one and it’s not quite at that point, but the likelihood is that it will get there eventually.

Rangers should continue to push in this transfer window to strengthen the squad as much as Beale believes it needs to be done. With all the trouble at Celtic right now, we’ve had a massive boost to close the gap quicker than expected so we have to take that chance.
