Kevin Drinkell in awe of Kemar Roofe amid Rangers £8.5m transfer development

Kevin Drinkell believes Kemar Roofe still has a part to play at Rangers despite Michael Beale closing in on two new strikers.

The Scottish Mail on Sunday reported on 11 June that Atalanta striker Sam Lammers is scheduled to arrive for a medical within the next 48 hours. It’s understood the 26-year-old Dutchman will join in a £3.5million deal.

It’s also believed the Gers have offered up to £5million including add-ons for Cremonese striker Cryriel Dessers (Daily Record, pg 58, 10 June).

Despite the influx of transfer activity, Drinkell believes Roofe could be like a new signing next season.

“He’d get back, play his part and do well and he’s just never had any consistency,” he told The Daily Record on Tuesday 12 June.

“It’s all about his fitness. If he’s fit, then he’s robust and he puts it about. He gets stuck in.

“But if you are trying to carry a knock or you are not fully fit, your effectiveness can dip.

“So as long as he is up to speed, confident in himself that he is not going to break down, he’d be a great addition to the squad.”

Spot on

It’s all about fitness for Roofe – that’s been the case for some time. We all know he is potentially Rangers’ most potent and effective attacker on his day. When given the chance, he often looks a cut above the level.

Two new forwards could well be a good thing for the 30-year-old.

It provides competition, but it will also allow Michael Beale to rotate. Roofe playing one game a week would be more than acceptable. Beale could look to keep the former Leeds forward in top condition for when Old Firm clashes arrive.

Rangers

Regarding the Gers’ transfer business, there’s little room for complaint.

Beale has been hard at work for months and has managed to get three signings over the line already with Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling and Kieran Dowell all arriving for free.

It’s now time for the board to get out the chequebook and back their man in the market. Lammers and Dessers look likely. Jose Cifuentes is another who could come through the door in the coming weeks.

In other Rangers news, a current Ibrox ace “will leave” once one of the aforementioned deals is completed.
