Chris Jack: Allan McGregor ‘should have retired’ after Rangers Europa League final defeat

Allan McGregor “should have retired” after Rangers lost the 2021/22 Europa League final to Eintracht Frankfurt, according to journalist Chris Jack.

The goalkeeper left Ibrox at the end of the most recent campaign following the expiry of his contract.

But Jack believes the club should have recruited a new number one last summer rather than continuing with McGregor and his counterpart Jon McLaughlin.

“In hindsight, the goalkeeping situation should have been addressed differently last summer,” Jack wrote for The National.

“McGregor should have retired on the back of Seville and the Scottish Cup and a new number one should have been recruited rather than faith being put in Jon McLaughlin.”

Club legend

Rangers may not have had the best season last time out, but that was hardly McGregor’s fault, with the Gers coming up short in various areas as their fierce rivals Celtic won the treble under Ange Postecoglou.

There is no doubting that McGregor leaves Ibrox this summer as a club legend, with the goalkeeper helping create countless amazing memories for fans of the Scottish Premiership outfit.

But it was definitely time for him to move on, with Michael Beale wasting no time in finding a suitable replacement in new arrival Jack Butland.

The former Crystal Palace and Stoke City goalkeeper won’t be able to hit the heights that McGregor did at Ibrox, but he can definitely cement legendary status if he stays at the club for the next few years and helps them win trophy after trophy.

He has big boots to fill in between the sticks, but Gers supporters will undoubtedly be full of encouragement for their new goalkeeper as he settles into life at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, Harry Maguire has sent a three-word message to Butland after the latter agreed to join the Gers.
