James Bisgrove must green light Kevin Thomson academy appointment after Rangers talks

Rangers CEO James Bisgrove has brought sweeping change to the club in recent times, and yet another appointment could now be on the cards.

The Gers will be looking to continue their major restructuring on and off the pitch this summer, and the departure of Craig Mulholland as the club’s academy director has opened up another vacancy to fill.

Former Rangers player Kevin Thomson has thrown his hat in the ring for this position and confirmed that he has held informal talks with Michael Beale and Bisgrove.

Speaking on the Off The Record podcast, and as reported by the Daily Record (7 June), Thomson said: “I’ve spoken to James, off the cuff, and I’ve spoken to Mick but I’m not the type to ask for an opportunity. If they think I could benefit the club, I’m sure they will pick up the phone.

“Rangers should only ever want the best coaches and available people at any given time – that’s how I view it – if you have a vision of where you want to get to.

“I would take a head of academy job tomorrow. I feel as though I could implement a lot of the ideas we have in my own academy, which is doing a good job.”

Thomson was previously employed by Rangers when he was head honcho of their B team but left his position in May 2021 to take the reins from Barry Ferguson as Kelty Hearts’ manager.

In his one year as manager at the Fife outfit, the 38-year-old lifted the League Two title and has since then dedicated his time to his own coaching academy.

Having players among the youth set-up who have previously played for Rangers and love the club can be no bad thing, and Thomson would certainly be able to relate to the young crop of stars emerging at Ibrox.

There would be few other names who know the club inside out as the Scotsman does, and this will surely be a major feather in his cap when Rangers come to making an appointment.

The fact that Bisgrove and Beale have held talks is a promising sign for Thomson taking this academy role, and they could do far worse than looking towards the former Gers midfielder.
