Rangers transfer news as billionaire owner wants to keep Cyriel Dessers after latest bid

Cremonese’s billionaire owner Giovanni Arvedi is desperate to keep Rangers target Cyriel Dessers at the club, despite their relegation from Serie A, according to the Daily Record.

The Nigerian international enjoyed a rather successful season, scoring 10 goals and registering two goals in all competitions for both Cremonese and Belgian outfit Genk whom he left last summer.

The Daily Record [5 June] reported that Gers had tabled a significant seven-figure bid for the forward but saw it turned down.

And according to the Daily Record print newspaper [6 June, back page & page 47], billionaire owner Arvedi wants to keep Dessers at the Italian outfit with the club under no financial pressure to sell this summer.

Though it is believed that the 28-year-old may be unwilling to play in the Italian second tier next season, with the striker contracted to the club for another four seasons.

Striker needed

Rangers manager Michael Beale is desperate to improve several areas of his squad this summer as the club looks to close the gap on fierce rivals Celtic.

The Gers were forced to watch on as the Bhoys lifted another treble, winning the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup.

And one of those key areas that desperately need to be strengthened right now is the striker role after the departure of Alfredo Morelos on a free transfer.

The Gers are believed to be set to secure a forward very soon and it seems as if Dessers is the man Michael Beale is chasing to replace the Colombian at Ibrox.

However, there may be doubts about Dessers’ goalscoring prowess. The 28-year-old has failed to reach double figures for goals in league fixtures in each of his last three campaigns at Cremonese, Genk and on-loan at Feyenoord during the 2021/22 campaign.

Rangers desperately need a talented and reliable goalscorer in order to properly challenge Celtic and Dessers simply can’t be their top striker target for next season. The Nigerian should only be a last resort.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been sent an injury warning regarding one of Beale’s new signings.
