Alex Rae sends Rangers triple transfer warning with decisions to be made

Alex Rae has warned that Rangers need to learn the lessons of the departures of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent with questions hanging over the future of Glen Kamara, John Lundstram and Borna Barisic, as featured in the Sunday Post, shared by the Daily Record.

With the clock running down on their respective deals, Rae wants action taken so that the club does not lose out once again, with a warning that players cannot be allowed to enter the last 12 months of their contracts.

With Morelos and Kent leaving on free transfers, the club has lost out on significant transfer fees at a pivotal time.

Rae issued the stark warning, as well as praising the credentials of Dujon Sterling, having come up against him at Stoke last season when he was assistant manager at Reading.

“It’s vital to shape up the first-team squad as quickly as possible. I like the fact Dujon Sterling has been brought in,” he said.

“I also think the club should make decisions with the futures of John, Glen and Borna.

“Are they going to be offered new deals or moved on? Lessons need to be learned from what happened with Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos. Letting players go into the final year of their deals is not the way to do it.”

Certainty

There is plenty of business to be done in the weeks ahead, which includes decisions on existing contracts in place at Ibrox as well as the new signings.

In terms of the three players named, the futures of one appears all but sealed, with a question mark on the other two.

Glen Kamara will leave Glasgow this summer, given the clear indication from the comments from Michael Beale last week. He also didn’t feature much in the closing stages of the season and represents an asset that can be cashed in to reinvest in others.

Lundstram is an interesting one as he is admired by the manager, including his ability to cover different roles, but he needs to find more consistency. Too often, he has been ineffectual whilst the club would not be difficult to deal with if an offer materialises.

The same could be said of Barisic, who has served the club well over recent years. He should be fazed out as long as Ridvan Yilmaz can make the left flank berth his own, whilst Sterling can also provide cover at left-back.

The Croatian international is a low-risk option to keep in the squad, but a fee could be obtained for him now.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been sent an injury warning regarding one of Beale’s new signings.
