Rangers clear to complete signing of Jack Butland as Crystal Palace deadline passes

Rangers are now clear to sign Jack Butland after Crystal Palace passed on the chance to extend his deal, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

Nixon reports (his personal Patreon, 4 June), that the Eagles had the option to trigger a new one-year deal, but decided against it.

It’s believed Rangers have been keen on the 30-year-old for over a year but their initial interest faded after Allan McGregor decided to prolong his playing career.

The goalkeeping position was certainly an area for Michael Beale to consider. McGregor’s retirement means the Gers have to land an accomplished shot-stopper. Butland’s career has stagnated somewhat in recent years.

A move to Ibrox does make a lot of sense. He needs to be playing regular first-team football and he would be a mainstay in Beale’s plans. Furthermore, he’s a good age. He could give the Gers six or seven years of service before deciding to hang up his boots.

The Rangers boss will be delighted to get a deal over the line. A new number one has been a problem for the Gers boss to solve. Now that the Light Blues have solved their goalkeeping issues, the board can look to improving the top end of the pitch.

Alfredo Morelos needs replacing. The Colombian was a decisive figure but his goalscoring record cannot be disputed. An effective number nine has to be next on the agenda.
