Kevin van Veen would be bad business for Rangers after transfer latest at Ibrox

It has been suggested that Rangers could be interested in bringing Motherwell’s Kevin van Veen to Ibrox after the striker enjoyed a red-hot campaign with the Fir Park club, scoring 25 Premiership goals.

Former Rangers captain Craig Moore has claimed that the Dutchman could be signed for as little as £750,000 which Well boss Stuart Kettlewell would strongly refute, but this move would be bad business for Michael Beale, as the summer squad rebuild gathers pace.

Significant signings are expected in attack, but where would Van Veen fit in?

As it stands, Beale will start pre-season with Antonio Colak, Fashion Sakala, Rabbi Matondo and Scott Wright in his group.

Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent have left the club already, with Wright and Matondo expected to be moved on. Sakala is a frustrating figure given how he can be terrible one week and very productive the next, but he can be a useful squad option unless the club receives an attractive bid for the Zambian.

With the two key departures and another couple likely, Beale will need to bring in at least three attackers of quality.

Beyond that, he isn’t likely to bring in a one-dimensional striker who is very good at scoring goals and not too much else.

In the Croatian international Colak, the Gers already have a poacher who will come alive in the box and get his share of goals as he displayed on Saturday against St Mirren, but the manager wants more than that.

He is likely to opt for a couple of options who can play in two or three roles, who can hold the ball up, who can link the play and who can run in behind. In this regard, just scoring goals won’t be enough.

One of these additions needs to bring 20-25 goals to the table next season, but there’s a bigger picture in terms of the squad rebuild.

This is why signing Van Veen, as good as he has been over the season for Motherwell, is a non-starter and would represent bad business.

In other Rangers news, Michael Beale is said to have met a player for the ‘final time’ as he closes in on another transfer.
