View: Rangers goalkeeper update indicates replacement for Robby McCrorie role

The latest Rangers contract news suggests that Michael Beale has decided on a replacement for Robby McCrorie’s existing role after Kieran Wright signed a two-year extension at the club.

The 23-year-old is most likely to fulfil a backup role within the squad as the effective third-choice option between the posts in addition to his responsibilities in training.

It means that Wright will take over from McCrorie in that regard with the latter now positioned to challenge for the number-one spot next season, along with a new goalkeeper to arrive at the club.

Gers boss Michael Beale has confirmed that a new keeper is imminent, with Jack Butland strongly tipped to make the move to Glasgow, once his season comes to an end with Manchester United where he has been on loan from Crystal Palace.

He has provided cover for David de Gea at Old Trafford since January but has not featured for Erik ten Hag’s side with their last game of the campaign set to follow at Wembley on Saturday in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

His arrival would be a very prominent acquisition as the club moves to fill the massive void left by the departing Allan McGregor.

In this assessment of the keeper situation at the club, a huge shadow is cast on the future of Jon McLaughlin after he performed poorly when given his chance during the season.

The former Hearts and Sunderland stopper was fortunate to get sustained game time as the responsibilities were shared between him and McGregor, but he failed to seize the opportunity.

He is not a contender for the number one spot any longer and with Wright signing a new deal, it points toward an Ibrox exit for the 35-year-old.
