Rangers transfer news as Jose Cifuentes now poised to agree deal - report

Ecuadorian international midfielder Jose Cifuentes is poised to agree a deal to sign for Rangers, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

Cifuentes, 24, has been an everpresent at Los Angeles FC since 2020, but his contract expires at the end of the current MLS season in December 2023.

The midfielder played a full 90 minutes overnight (Thursday, 18 May) as LAFC drew 1-1 against Kansas City, his ninth appearance of the season.

Ross Wilson originally put Cifuentes on the club’s radar amid interest from Leeds United and Celtic, but the Gers are now in “pole position” to complete the signing. [Daily Record, 18 May]

On the back page of the Scottish Daily Mail [18 May], the headline signalled that Michael Beale was closing in on the midfield addition.

“Cifuentes poised to agree deal at Rangers,” it said.

Exciting times

In the January transfer window, both Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin were nearing the end of their contracts at their clubs, which subsequently allowed the Gers to snap up the duo on a cut-price deal.

And after the success of the two midfielders, it looks like Beale is looking to finalise a deal in a similar vein for Cifuentes.

With the Ecuadorian’s contract at LAFC expiring in December, Rangers won’t have to pay much upfront and could well be getting a bargain as a result.

With Rangers in need of a major squad overhaul this summer and Beale admitting there could be as many as a dozen changes to the first-team squad, every penny counts.

Cifuentes is ready for Premier League football after racking up just shy of 100 appearances for the American outfit and accumulating 13 caps for his country.

Alongside Raskin and Cantwell, the future of Beale’s midfield at Ibrox looks like it is starting to take shape.

In other Rangers news, Manchester United are looking to hijack an Ibrox transfer by offering a double your money deal.
