Dujon Sterling perfectly timed Rangers contingency plan for James Tavernier as transfer news drops
Rangers have reportedly landed the signing of Chelsea defender Dujon Sterling, representing a perfect long-term plan to replace one of their key stars.
The full-back had been on loan from Stamford Bridge at Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City during the 2022/23 campaign, making 28 appearances for the Potters in all competitions.
The Scottish Daily Mail revealed Rangers had reached an agreement to sign Chelsea’s Dujon Sterling on a free transfer this summer (Back page and page 77, 12 May).

“Now, after passing a medical, the Stamford Bridge academy graduate has agreed to become part of a significant summer squad rebuild.
“Chelsea had the option to extend the defender’s contract, but decided against taking advantage.”
Football Scotland reported on Tuesday 16 May, Michael Beale has “landed” his man and that Sterling is set to complete his move north of the border.
It’s believed the 23-year-old was offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge following an excellent loan spell at Stoke City, who were also keen, but the talented defender was said to be keen on a move to Ibrox.
Rangers need to strengthen in all areas amid a very disappointing trophy-less campaign for the club, who have witnessed fierce rivals Celtic topple them in every domestic competition available.

Beale is expected to be very busy in the summer transfer window, with Rangers set to be linked with a long list of players over the coming months and he has certainly handed the Gers faithful some fresh confidence heading into a testing off-season with Sterling’s signing.
However, not only does Sterling represent a stunning bargain deal completed by Beale and the club, but it also points to a long-term future at Ibrox which may not include one of their fan favourites.
Football Scotland previously revealed on 11 May that the Light Blues only needed to negotiate the wages of Sterling to secure the transfer as they see him as a long-term replacement for veteran full-back James Tavernier.
The 23-year-old certainly seems a perfect option for Rangers to think about replacing Tavernier eventually, as Sterling’s marauding speed, defensive presence and athleticism makes him a stunning Beale profile and also possessing the traits that could certainly endear him to the Ibrox faithful before long.
Tavernier has proven a sensational servant at Ibrox over the years, recording a staggering 100 goals and 117 assists from 399 appearances highlighting his incredible influence since his move from Wigan in 2015.

There certainly won’t be a defender in the future capable of matching those jaw-dropping numbers in a Rangers shirt again, but it is clear that the 31-year-old isn’t getting any younger and the best clubs who recruit well always have a contingency plan lined up, and it seems as though Rangers have learned their lessons in that department.
Sterling won’t be a starter at Tavernier’s expense so soon but he’d definitely lift the weight off his broad shoulders. But more, crucially, the 23-year-old could develop considerably under Tavernier’s wing granting him a better opportunity at becoming a top Rangers player in the future.
It’s nice to see Rangers already planning ahead with this move, something that’s been far from them for so long and in Sterling, they possess a player capable of moving the club forward once more when Tavernier eventually hangs up his boots. A sensational deal for all parties.
