Kevin van Veen to Rangers verdict shared amid £1m prediction - pundit

Alan Rough believes Rangers fans will be expecting better than Motherwell’s 26-goal striker Kevin van Veen.

The 31-year-old has caught the eye in the Scottish Premiership this season at Fir Park and was selected for the PFA Scotland team of the year.

However, talking on the latest edition of the PLZ Football Show, Rough believes Rangers will be looking at an international standard striker.

“Tha manager’s already been saying that no one can afford him, apart from Rangers and Celtic. You’ll have to be thinking they’ll be wanting £1million,” said Rough (PLZ Football Show, 06m 01s, 16 May).

“And they’re not going to get that, not many of the clubs here can afford that. I think Rangers supporters will want better than Van Veen. I don’t know where he’s coming from but I think they’ll want an established striker, possibly an international who is in the right price range.

“I am not knocking the by Van Veen, anyone who scores 26 goals, that’s fantastic.”

Amazing

The Dutchman has certainly had an amazing season and deserves credit. Had he been five or six years younger, Rangers or Celtic would almost certainly be looking to get a deal over the line. However, due to his age, there’s a strong chance this will be a one-season wonder.

Rough is right. Rangers do need better when it comes to forward areas. Alfredo Morelos is set to depart and will need replacing. Antonio Colak has been a disappointing addition and the jury is certainly still out. Talk of an Ibrox summer departure has even emerged.

A younger striker to come in and take the number nine shirt is required. Swansea City’s Joel Piroe has been talked about the Dutchman would be the perfect replacement for the outgoing Colombian.

This summer promises to be huge for Michael Beale and the board and there are a number of deals already in the pipeline. Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling and Kieran Dowell all look set to put pen to paper in the coming weeks.
