Graeme Souness behind-the-scenes appointment at Ibrox would ‘excite’ Rangers fans

The appointment of Rangers legend Graeme Souness as the club’s new sporting director would “excite” fans, according to journalist Gavin Berry.

The position is vacant after Ross Wilson recently departed to take up a similar role at Nottingham Forest.

Souness both played for and managed the Gers before venturing into punditry with Sky Sports, something which is set to come to an end very soon.

“Craig Moore threw his hat into the ring for the vacant Rangers sporting director role in an exclusive Record Sport interview,” Berry wrote for the Daily Record.

“But it’s the name of another former Ibrox man that has been swirling around in connection with the position as Light Blues chief executive James Bisgrove looks to fill the shoes of Ross Wilson following his departure to Nottingham Forest.

“And it’s a name that would certainly excite Rangers fans if it came to fruition. Graeme Souness has a bit more time on his hands after ending his 15-year stint in the Sky Sports studio. Would he swap the comfy seat for a pressure position at his old club?”

Decisions to be made

A host of names have been linked with the very important behind-the-scenes position at Ibrox, but the club would need to act fast and appoint an experienced candidate sooner rather than later.

It may not be the most prominent role at Ibrox, but it is a very significant one given the current need for talented players at the club as the Gers look to close the gap on fierce rivals Celtic next season.

There will be plenty of focus on finishing the season strongly, but more focus will be on sorting things out for the upcoming campaign, both on and off the pitch.

Manager Michael Beale has already started to take matters into his own hands when it comes to transfers, but he undoubtedly needs a second opinion to help him out.

Souness perhaps knows the club better than most, but it remains to be seen exactly what he can bring to the Scottish giants having been away from matters behind-the-scenes for so long.

In other Rangers news, Alfredo Morelos took to Instagram to share a message as he is set to seal a permanent exit from the Ibrox outfit this month.
