‘Too expensive’ goalkeeper demands opens up Robby McCrorie long-term option for Rangers

Robby McCrorie’s excellent performance in Saturday’s Old Firm victory has enhanced his prospects as Rangers’ number-one goalkeeper for next season with the latest reports on Jack Butland providing further encouragement for him.

It has been said that the England international’s wage demands are “too expensive” meaning Michael Beale could be forced into his Plan B situation.

Another goalkeeper is most likely to arrive at Ibrox over the summer but McCrorie is in an excellent position to take advantage of his current momentum to provide a long-term option for the club.

Over the last two games, the 25-year-old has added two clean sheets to the two that he picked up in the 2021/22 season, against Celtic and Alashkert.

In the biggest game of them all for Rangers, McCrorie has proven that he is not fazed.

Crucially, he has shown that he has the concentration and diligence required at Ibrox when the keeper will be idle for long spells before making the save that matters.

That is what happened with his fantastic scoop over the bar from Matt O’Riley’s effort, to maintain Rangers two-goal lead.

Chip off the old block

It could be said that he has learned from the best in Allan McGregor after years of training with him, as well as observing his teammate on a match day.

Like McGregor, McCrorie has had to be very patient for his chance at Ibrox, following loan spells at lesser clubs around Scottish football and then advancing in the pecking order at Ibrox.

His application and attitude is spot on, with some similar traits to the Rangers veteran whilst he has contrasted himself with his command of the box in coming for cross balls and his agility to come out, in a boost for the high line that Beale likes to play.

It just feels that McCrorie’s case is gathering pace and reason. With three Premiership games remaining, his aim must be to continue to impress as much as possible to make it impossible for the manager to look elsewhere for next season.

He fully deserves the chance to earn the spot as his own.

In other Rangers news, one player who is available and admitted he wanted a deal in the past year was spotted at Ibrox for the Old Firm derby.
