Rangers: Neil McCann raves about Robbie McCrorie vs Celtic on BBC Sportscene as number one verdict shared

Neil McCann was full of praise for the “excellent” Robby McCrorie as Rangers eased past Celtic 3-0 on Saturday (13 May).

McCrorie kept a clean sheet in the victory at Ibrox in what was only his second match of the entire season.

The goalkeeper made several important interventions throughout the 90 minutes, including one moment in which he rapidly closed down Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu, whose chipped effort rebounded off the post.

“Although people say Oh should score there, I think Robby McCrorie – who was excellent – does really well to get out and try and smother it, get out to the feet [of Oh] and make it difficult,” McCann said on BBC Sportscene (13 May, 13m 50s).

Host Steven Thompson then asked: “He’s only had limited game time, Robby McCrorie. Can he be the Rangers number one next season?”

Pundit Scott Allan replied: “It’s a really big ask, he’s maybe not had the number of games that he would have wanted to maybe class himself as the number one, but he’s done himself no harm with the performances he’s put in of late.”

Scintillating display at Ibrox

Many Celtic fans will claim that their injury-hit squad will not have cared one bit about the defeat to their bitter rivals, but such fans would be lying given how much it means across the city of Glasgow.

It may not have meant an awful lot in terms of this season’s Scottish Premiership, with Ange Postecoglou’s men having already clinched the league title, but it was a very important moment for Michael Beale, who finally got the better of Celtic.

The added bonus was that it came at Ibrox, with his side producing a perfect display at both ends; scoring three goals and keeping a clean sheet in the process.

That latter issue is a significant one for McCrorie, who has now kept back-to-back clean sheets after playing in the 1-0 win against Aberdeen on Sunday (7 May).

With a major shake-up expected at Ibrox this summer in all areas, the goalkeeper has really boosted his chances of being Beale’s number one next season with his displays against Celtic and Aberdeen.

In other Rangers news, Kenny Miller believes the Gers have a “new hero” following one player’s “superb” display against Celtic.
