Rangers: Chris Sutton embarrassed by journalist after Celtic defeat as Todd Cantwell praise comes back to bite him

Jonny McFarlane turned Chris Sutton’s own words against him after his sarcastic reaction as Rangers beat Celtic at Ibrox on Saturday (13 May).

The Gers picked up an Old Firm victory at the final attempt this season with a morale-boosting 3-0 scoreline, to give Michael Beale something to build on over the summer in a game that was admittedly too little, too late this season.

Sutton immediately dismissed the result as meaningless, but saw Ranger Review’s McFarlane turn the tables by digging up a choice bit of positive punditry from the ex-Hoops striker on Gers star Todd Cantwell, who had opened the scoring in an excellent display.

Sutton had posted an immediate reaction to the result on Twitter where the pundit had said: “Well done Rangers on winning the Doesn’t Matter Trophy against Celtic Reserves… brilliant stuff.”

McFarlane reacted with an old screenshot of happier times between former Norwich men where Sutton had posted: “Really enjoyed chatting to Todd Cantwell yesterday… intelligent and articulate he’s a young man who is going places…”.

With it the journalist wrote on his own Twitter account: “Surely you should be celebrating your first ever bit of incisive punditry!”

Better late than never

It won’t make up for a season of disappointment that saw the biggest games routinely prove a step too far for this Rangers side, but it is certainly better than nothing.

Granted, it is a consolation win as Celtic close in on a probable domestic treble, but we already knew the campaign hadn’t been good enough and the last derby of the season was as much about what would come next over the summer and next season.

In that sense there was plenty of reason to be hopeful, with standout performances from members of the new generation of players under Beale, including Cantwell, who fired home through Joe Hart’s legs in the opening minutes, and Robby McCrorie, who made it four clean sheets in four senior appearances, and two in two against Celtic.

Rangers

It’s all very well finally turning it on when the pressure is off, and the real test will begin at the start of next season, but after going five-straight Old Firms without a win this year, and four since Beale arrived, this result will at least clear the mental barrier.

And after a season where he has been wallowing in his ability to lord it over Ally McCoist and the rest of the Rangers fanbase it was a tiny bit back for Sutton.

The next step is clearly to get the recruitment right in order to replace the outgoing old guard properly, so the Gers can start on level pegging and provide a proper title race in the new campaign.

In other Rangers news, Beale now has a free run at one of his favourites after a confirmed transfer development on Thursday.
