Chris Sutton argues with Rangers fan live on BBC radio after Celtic Old Firm loss, Robbie Savage apologises for his attitude
Chris Sutton had the tables turned on him by a Rangers fan after the 3-0 win over Celtic at Ibrox on Saturday (13 May) during BBC 5 Live’s 606 show.
Never shy about rubbing the Light Blues’ noses in it after a Hoops victory, a Gers supporter finally got the opportunity to give some back as Michael Beale’s side won the last Old Firm derby of the season via goals from Todd Cantwell, John Souttar and Fashion Sakala.
Sutton wasn’t ready to concede Rangers were better on the day, and Robbie Savage enjoyed the exchange enough to apologise for his colleague’s argumentative attitude.
Reacting to a caller on BBC 5 Live’s 606 phone-in Sutton said to Paul the Ibrox supporter: “Did Cameron Carter-Vickers play? The best defender in Scotland… yes or no answers… Did Kyogo play?”
To Cantwell’s strike going through Joe Hart’s legs he fired back: “You’ve won the Nutmeg Cup, you’ve won the Doesn’t Matter Cup, you’ve won the Closed the Gap Cup, but what about the league? What’s happened in the League Cup where it matters? What happened in the semi final of the Scottish Cup when it mattered? You didn’t turn up Paul.”
“I’d just like to apologise, Paul, for Chris’ attitude,” Savage cut in.
Late show
To be fair to Sutton it would be no fun if he didn’t rise to it when he is on the losing side, after winding up anyone he can when he’s on the winning side.
Unfortunately for Rangers he has experienced the latter far too often this season, and while the comfortable victory in May puts a pleasing gloss on the end of a bad campaign and breaks a dismal run in Old Firm derbies, it is really the least this side could do.
It’s true that Ange Postecoglou made changes but, as Paul the Gers fan noted, Sutton would have been the first in line to point out they had won with a second-choice side if the result had gone the other way.

The match proved that Beale’s men are plenty good enough to defeat an under-strength Celtic XI, but now they need to do the same in head-to-heads when the chips are down.
Cantwell, Robby McCrorie and Nico Raskin stood out to suggest shoots of recovery within this squad, but now the manager has to ensure he makes the right moves in the market to compliment them.
Reverting to type next season and routinely shooting themselves in the foot to hand wins to Postecoglou and company will render this win even more meaningless than some already are claiming it to be, so the work arguably starts now rather than ends.
In other Rangers news, Beale can pick up one of his long-term favourites who wanted an Ibrox deal in the past 12 months with ease now after a confirmed exit.
