Barry Ferguson moots ‘surprise’ English Championship move for Rangers ace Ben Davies
Barry Ferguson has mooted a “surprise” English Championship move for Rangers defender Ben Davies.
The 27-year-old joined the Gers from Premier League giants Liverpool last summer, and has gone on to make 38 appearances in blue.
But Ferguson believes the defender is “well thought of” in the Championship, with one club potentially taking him back to England this summer.
“So many new players will be coming in and a lot will be going out the door – and maybe some who might be a surprise,” Ferguson wrote for the Daily Record.
“A lot of people just think it will be the out of contract players who will be leaving but there might be more than that.
“Ben Davies, for instance. He’s still well thought of in the English Championship, so maybe someone will come in for him.”
One to keep
Davies struggled to land regular playing time during his early stages at Rangers, with the defender perhaps fearing he had made another mistake by joining the club after constantly watching on from the sidelines at Liverpool.
But the centre-back worked hard behind the scenes and became a regular alongside Connor Goldson in central defence, with Davies now boasting 26 Scottish Premiership appearances to his name.
It would be very strange, therefore, if Beale was to let the defender leave this summer, unless of course he has a ready-made replacement lined up.
Davies has been one of Beale’s most-used players this season, and although it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the former Liverpool man, he has still impressed enough to constantly find himself in the starting XI.
The long-term injury to John Souttar may have also boosted his chances under Beale, with the manager perhaps going to favour Souttar in the next campaign.
In other Rangers news, one player’s fate at the club beyond the end of this season rests in the hands of Beale, according to Chris Jack.
